Special Stitches

#1 – “X-single crochet (xsc) – “under/under” technique
This stitch is used for the head, ears and limbs.  It is a variation of the single crochet stitch used for amigurumi.  It provides a tighter, neater stitch with less gaps which prevents stuffing from poking out of the crocheted piece.  A single crochet makes a “v” shape on the right side of the fabric whereas the x-single crochet makes a “x” shape.  Here is the difference:
Single Crochet:  Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull loop through stitch, yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook to complete stitch.
X-single Crochet:  Insert hook into stitch, yarn under, pull loop through stitch, yarn under, pull through 2 loops on hook to complete stitch.

#2 – Extended stitches: extended single crochet (esc), extended half double crochet (ehdc), extended double crochet (edc), extended treble crochet (etrc).
These extended stitches are used for the blanket portion of the lovey. The esc is used for most of the blanket.  The ehdc, edc, and etrc are only used on the round that makes the center circle into a square.  Extended stitches are easy to crochet and provide a little extra texture to the stitch.  They are all made by adding an extra pull through on the first loop of the stitch for example:
esc:  insert hook into stitch, yo, pull up loop (2 loops on hook), yo, pull through 1st loop on hook, yo, pull through 2 loops on hook to complete.
ehdc:  yo, Insert hook into stitch, yo, pull up loop (3 loops on hook), yo, pull through 1st loop on hook, yo, pull through 3 loops on hook to complete.
edc:  yo, insert hook into stitch, yo, pull up loop (3 loops on hook), yo, pull through 1st loop on hook, yo, pull through 2 loops on hook, yo, pull through last 2 loops on hook to complete.
etrc:  yo 2 times, insert hook into stitch, yo, pull up loop (4 loops on hook), yo, pull through 1st loop on hook, yo, pull through 2 loops on hook, yo, pull through 2 loops on hook, yo, pull through last 2 loops on hook to complete.

#3 – Invisible decrease (sc2tog)
This technique is used for the head of the bunny.  It is a technique of making the sc2tog less noticeable and minimizes gaps between the stitches. When reaching the decrease stitches:
– Insert hook into front loop only of the first stitch of the decrease.
– Insert hook into the front loop only of the next stitch in the decrease.  This can be a little awkward if your tension is tight.
– As in a normal sc2tog, yo, pull through both loops of decrease stitches on hook, yo, pull through remaining 2 loops on hook to complete.

#

#6 – Invisible join –
This
method is used to join the 1st 4 rnds of blanket. To invisible join:

·
Drop loop from last stitch in round,

·
Insert hook into 1st stitch in round
from back to front,

·
Put dropped loop back onto hook ensuring the
working yarn is to the back of your work,

·
Pull dropped loop through 1st st to
complete join.

#5 – Pom-pom Stitch
This stitch is used as a decorative trim on the corner of the lovey blanket to represent the fluffy tail of a bunny.  It is made using 2 clusters of double crochet stitches stacked together to form a round ball.  When reaching the point to add pom-pom:
Step 1 – first cluster
– Ch 2, *yo, insert hook into 2nd ch from hook, pull up loop, yo, pull through 2 loops on hook, repeat from * 2 more times, leaving the last loop of each dc on the hook (4 loops on hook).
– yo, pull through all 4 loops on hook.  1 dc3tog completed.
Step 2 – second cluster
– Ch 2,
– Working into the top of the last cluster, make another dc3tog.
Step 3 – joining clusters
– Insert hook into the same stitch that the first cluster was started in Step 1, slip stitch.  This will bring the two clusters together to form two halves of the pom-pom ball

Pattern Notes

The head, ears, arms, and blanket are made separately and sewn together.  The head, ears and arms are made by crocheting in continuous rounds.  The blanket, although made in rounds, is turned at the end of each round.  The eyes and nose are embroidered on the face.  Poly-fill stuffing is used in the head, ears, and arms.

The bow tie for the “he” version is made in rows  For the “she version, colour changes are made on the arms to give the appearance of clothes.  The first round of the sleeves are worked in the back loops only, leaving front loops to attach the trim detail.

RND 1:   Ch 3, slst back into same st, *slst into next st, ch 3, slst back into same st, repeat from * 9 more times, slst into 1st st in rnd. (10 picots) Fasten off. Weave in ends.

SEW ARMS TO BODY
1.  Stabilize tail left at armhole so yarn can be used as a gathering thread by stitching into one st.
2.  Weave tail into back loop of each stitch around armhole of sleeve, pull to gather in stitches and make puff in sleeve. Add a small amount of stuffing to maintain the puff.
3.  Look for colour jog on body when colour B was added on RND 15, sew one arm over join to hide jog. Maintain the puff in the sleeve when sewing to body.
4. Sew second arm to body so that they are centered on either side of body.  Weave in en

SEW EARS TO HEAD
Center ears on either side of starting mc on top of head.  In keeping with the Bunny Buns theme the ears are sewn straight up  however, personalize your bunny to your preferences.

FLOWER BUDS- Make 3
– Using scrap yarn, ch 4. Fasten off leaving tail to sew bud to head.
– Roll chain into a ball and secure in a bud shape.
– Sew flower buds to bunny head centered on top of head in front of ears.
–
Use an assortment of colours or make all 3 buds the same colour.

FINISHING FACE
– Center eyes on ears about 4 rounds down, tie in place, pull ends into bunny.
– Using scrap (i used pink) sew mouth centered between eyes about 2 rnds below rosebuds.

BUNNY EYES – Make 2
Using 10”/26.5 cm piece of yarn in your preferred colour (I used black), make a circle with the yarn as if to tie a knot but don’t pull tight. Wrap yarn into the circle 5 more times. Pull the 2 ends of the yarn tighter until you have a long knot. Be careful not to pull too tight as this will make the knot too small.
