French Press Cozy Sets – Keep it Hot in the Pot
I use my coffee maker to brew a quick cup. It is easy and convenient. But then there are those times I like the ritual of brewing my coffee using my French Press. There is something to be said about taking the time to make it with ease and just enjoy the peaceful time while it brews, anticipating that flavorful cup to snuggle up with. These are the days when my schedule allows for a slower pace of life and there is time for self-care. That’s how I see it. Taking time for me. Finding joy in the small moments.  These are the times I use a French Press Cozy Set.  I have several cozy patterns to choose from, the Boho French Press Cozy Set and the Nannie Annie French Press Cozy Set.  Both of these sets are made for a 1 litre size with #4 weight yarn, but they can easily be adjusted to fit other sizes.  See the free pattern below to see how to adjust the Bobo version.

Boho French Press Cozy Set - 3 cup

Boho French Press Cozy Set – Flower (3 cup)
For this pattern, a few changes have been made to the original version of the Boho French Press Cozy set as follows:
1.  Yarn:  This version is made with #5 bulky yarn rather than 2 strands of #4.
2.  Size: This version is for a smaller size French press.  It is for 3 cup rather 4-6 cups.
3. Finishing Details:  This version has flower adornments rather than tassels.

PATTERN

SIZE
For 3 cup French Press – Cozy size 7.5″ x 19″ (19 x 48.2 cm)
This cozy is easy to adjust by measuring your French Press.  Take the following measurements before beginning to determine the length of the starting chain (fig. 1) and how many rows to crochet (fig. 2).
using tape measurer to measure height of French Press
fig. 1
Using measuring tape to measure width of French Press
fig. 2
ALTERNATE SIZING NOTES: To make alternate sizes, measure your French Press from the top of the plunger when it is in the down position to the bottom of the French Press (see fig. 1). This will be the height of your cozy. Make your initial chain this length plus one chain for turning.  To determine the number of rows, wrap your piece around your French Press so that the two ends meet. The cozy should fit with some positive ease so it can easily slip over the press.  Measure the diameter of the bottom of the press (see fig. 2) to determine the size of the Press Mat.  Finish as per instructions in the pattern below.

MATERIALS
#5 bulky yarn.  This version uses Loops & Threads – Bulky Tubular (1 ball) 131 yd / 7.05 oz • 120 m / 200 g
8mm crochet hook
Stitch markers
Tapestry needle

Special Techniques

#1 – Twisted Single Crochet (tsc)
The technique is used as a finishing stitch for the last round on the press mat and cup coasters.  It looks like the crab stitch but it is easier as it is worked forward rather than backwards like the crab stitch. Here are the steps:
1.   Insert hook into the stitch as to make a single crochet.
2.  Pull loop through stitch (2 loops on hook), it is good to leave a little slack on the loops so they can be twisted.
3.  Twist hook with loops on it, 1 full revolution.
4.  Yo, pull through both loops on hook to complete the single crochet.  Twisted single crochet is completed (see fig. 3).

Cozy Cover – Make 1
Ch 20 (this chain length should match the measurement taken in fig. 1),
ROW 1:   Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in BLO in next 4 ch (this makes shaping at top of cozy), hdc in remaining st in ch (14), ch 1, turn. (19 st)

Note: For this version the number of stitches is 19 so the pattern will be written for this stitch count.  If you have adjusted your starting chain to accommodate the size of your French Press and  have a different number of stitches, adjust the stitch counts on each row.  However there should be 5 sc stitches at the top of the cozy for shaping.  Make any count adjustments with the number of hdc used.

ROW 2:   Hdc in 1st st, hdc in BLO until reaching last 5 st of row, sc 4 in BLO , sc 1,  ch 1, turn. (19 st)
ROW 3:   Sc in 1st st, sc 4 in BLO, hdc 13 in BLO, hdc, ch 1, turn. (19 st)
ROW 4 – 20:  Repeat ROW 2 – 3.  Do not fasten off.  Proceed to “Finishing Cozy.”

Finishing Cozy
Fold cozy cover in half lengthwise with wrong side on the inside.
Step #1 – Join Above Handle
– You will be joining last row of ribbing to foundation chain.  Start at top, pull loop from left edge through top st on right edge, slst.
– In next stitch, * insert hook into loop of foundation chain on front edge and through back loop of stitch on back, slst, repeat from * 4 more times.   Check the fit before fastening off and adjust accordingly.  The number of stitches to close this edge may vary depending upon where your handle is on your French Press.  When satisfied with fit, fasten off.  Weave in ends.

Step #2 – Join Below Handle
 –
Count 4 stitches up from bottom (depending on the placement of the handle on your French Press the number of stitches joined at the bottom my vary.  Adjust accordingly.)
– Insert hook through loop of foundation chain on front edge and through back loop of 4th stitch (or stitch to fit your press) from bottom on back edge, slst.  Repeat this method and slst in the next st to close below handle.  Fasten off.  Weave in ends.

The section left open between the two joining points will allow the handle of the French Press to be exposed.

 Top Opening for Plunger
 – Weave a strand of yarn through the top edge of the cozy.
–  Pull top edge closed leaving an opening big enough to allow the plunger to go through but tight enough to prevent as much heat as possible from escaping.  Secure opening.  Weave in ends.

French Press Mat – Make 1
The flat circle will be made in continuous rnds, make a mc, ch 1,
RND 1:   Sc 6 in mc (tip: place a stitch marker into first stitch of the rnd to identify the start of the rnd.  Move the marker to first st on ea rnd.)  Pull mc closed.  (6 st)
RND 2:   Sc in 1st st of rnd (st with marker), sc into same st, sc 2 in ea of the following st. (12 st)
RND 3:   Sc 2 in 1st st, sc in next st, *sc 2 in next st, sc, repeat from * 4 more times. (18 st)
RND 4:   Sc 2 in 1st st, sc in next 2 st, *sc in next st, sc in next 2 st, repeat from * 4 more times.  (24 st)
RND 5:   Sc in 1st st, sc in next 3 st, *sc 2 in next st, sc in next 3 st, repeat from * 4 more times.  (30 st)
RND 6:   Sc in 1st st, sc in next 4 st, *sc 2 in next st, sc in next 4 st, repeat from * 4 more times.  (36 st)
RND 7:   Tsc in ea st to last st in rnd, slst in last st.  Fasten off.  Weave in ends. (36 st)

Note:  Your press mat should be large enough that the cozy sits within the edges of the mat.  If your mat needs to be wider, you can increase the diameter by adding more rounds before the finishing RND 7.  Continue the sequence after RND 6 crocheting 1 extra stitch between the increases.  (For example the next rnd after RND 6 would have 5 stitches between the increases.)

Cup Coaster – Make number preferred
Repeat RND 1 – RND 5 of French Mat
RND 6:  Tsc in ea st to last st in rnd, slst in last st.  Fasten off.  Weave in ends.  (30 st)o

Flower Adornments for Cozy – Make 3
Make mc, ch 1,
RND 1:   Sc 5 in mc, pull mc closed. (5 st)
RND 2:   (Petals) *Ch 2, dc 2 in 1st st, ch 2, slst in same st, repeat from * 4 more times, slst into starting st.  Fasten off leaving a tail long enough to sew flower to cozy.  (5 petals)

Space 3 flowers evenly around top of cozy sewing them where the 5 sc end and the hdc begin (see fig. 4).   Weave in ends.
